There are no slouches as the Tulip City basketball teams hit the road tonight as the boys open the season in a pair of girls-boys doubleheaders.

Pella heads to Alleman to take on North Polk and Pella Christian heads to Adel to play against ADM.

The Eagles girls will take on a 2-0 ADM team who throttled common opponent Van Meter before Thanksgiving 69-43, a Bulldogs squad 0-2 Pella Christian fell to 49-40 to in the season opener. Pella Christian’s high octane senior-heavy boys team will have quite the test themselves against an ADM Tigers team that returns four of five top scorers from 2019 who averaged 39 of the teams 61 points per game. Head Coach Larry Hessing says the vast majority of their schedule, both in conference and out of the league, will likely be among the toughest in Class 2A basketball — a challenge he believes his experienced team is ready to face.

“ADM has a lot of returning players, and one of their good, young returning players, I saw that he finished high in the state cross country meet,” Hessing says. “ADM is a nice, 3A team and we have to go to their place and they’ll be ready for us.”

Coverage from ADM High School for Pella Christian basketball starts at 5:45 p.m. on 92.1 KRLS, as Andrew Schneider and Wynne Veenstra are back in the broadcast booth to call the action.

The 1-0 Lady Dutch will take on the preseason No. 2 ranked in 3A North Polk Comets who have lost twice to No. 9 in 4A DCG and No. 3 in 5A Johnston. Pella will take on a young Comets boys team in the night cap. Hear those games live on the KRLS2 stream at KNIAKRLS.com with Trevor Castle and Mike Buchheit, with pregame starting at 5:45 p.m.
