A non-conference basketball rivalry will be renewed tonight when Pella Christian makes the short trek up Highway 163 to take on PCM.

The Eagles boys are riding high after a 2-0 start with a pair of last-second wins in the opening week of the season over ADM and Pella, and will take on a 2-0 Mustangs team who is off to a fast start of their own. It’s a rivalry in the boys game featuring two of the greatest Iowa High School basketball coaches to ever roam the sidelines, and a pair that has clashed several times over the past two and a half decades. Pella Christian Head Coach Larry Hessing and PCM Head Coach Fred Lorensen have combined for over 1200 wins and 21 state tournament appearances. Both coaches have respect for the other and how they prepare for big games, and Lorensen says tonight’s matchup will be quite the challenge for his Mustangs.

The Eagles girls are seeking their first win of the season after starting the winter with a difficult slate of teams, and Head Coach Brad Engbers is hopeful they can stay the course and keep fighting to find that first victory. Pella Christian will have a tough test in containing PCM Senior Regan Freland, who is averaging 21 points per game to lead the Mustangs to a 2-1 start.

Coverage of the Eagles and Mustangs basketball doubleheader starts at 5:45 p.m. on 92.1 KRLS, with Andrew Schneider and Wynne Veenstra calling the action from PCM High School.
