indianola-3

Stepping out of Little Hawkeye Conference play, the Indianola Indians met up with an old rival on their home court Tuesday evening, splitting a doubleheader with Urbandale as the boys won 55-36 and the girls falling 63-42. The Indians boys led from start to finish against the J-Hawks, and got off to a fast start with an 8-0 lead to start off the first quarter, but Urbandale battled back to cut the lead to one several times before the Indians took control with a 33-20 halftime lead. In the third, the Indians continued to slowly build the lead and took full control in the fourth, holding the J-Hawks to just five points. Head coach Brett Watson tells KNIA Sports the Indians defense was stellar.

“When you can play defense like that and hold a quality ball club like Urbandale to 36 points you gotta be pretty happy with the defense. I was really proud of our guys for locking in the game plan and understanding some things that Urbandale ran, we just did a nice job defensively.”

AJ Toigo led the Indians with 20 points, including four and-ones throughout the contest. The Indians girls couldn’t muster enough offense to compete with a tough Urbandale squad, falling behind early by double digits and not being able to cut into the lead. The Indians only trailed by 13 at the halftime break 35-22, but six three-point baskets from the J-Hawks in the second half destroyed any chance of a comeback. Lauren Blake and Mara Bishop had 8 points apiece to lead the squad. The Indians boys are now on a 9-game winning streak and sit at 9-2, while the girls are now 7-4. Both squads will next play Friday hosting Norwalk.
