The PCM Mustangs split a pair of road games Friday night with the South Hamilton Hawks as the Mustang girls won 49-38 and the boys fell 56-52. In the girls game, PCM would fall behind early as South Hamilton would take an 11-2 lead after the first quarter of play. PCM however, would out score the Hawks 17-4 in the second quarter to take a 19-15 lead at the half. Both teams found themselves dealing with inconsistent foul calls throughout the game leading to a total of 49 fouls being called which put players on both teams in foul trouble. PCM Head Girls Basketball Coach Jeff Lindsay tells KNIA/KRLS Sports when it comes to games like this, you have to learn to adapt. Lindsey says it felt like if his players go to close to another player they would get called for a foul, so he told his girls they needed to attack the basket and take advantage of the fouls being called by getting to the foul line. In the second half PCM would get to a ten point lead and would maintain that lead the rest of the game eventually winning 49-38. PCM was led by senior Regan Freland’s 18 points despite fouling out with close to two mins left in the game. PCM moves to 9-11 overall and will next face Gilbert on Tuesday.
In the boys game, the inconsistent foul calls would continue for both teams, and again the Mustangs would trail after one quarter of play 9-7 before going on a run in the second quarter out scoring the Hawks 22-12 on their way to a 31-19 halftime lead. The difference in the boys game compared to the girls was the third quarter run by South Hamilton which saw the hawks outscore PCM 19-8 and only trail by one, 39-38 after the third quarter. South Hamilton would get the lead in the fourth quarter and never look back despite 24 points by PCM senior Jason Stafford. South Hamilton would get the 56-52 win, dropping PCM to 11-8 overall and 7-6 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.
