The Pella Christian basketball teams both had fourth quarter leads last night in Grimes, but DCG rallied twice to complete a sweep of the doubleheader heard live on 92.1 KRLS.  The Fillies won 54-45, while the Mustangs won 50-48 in overtime.

It was yet another stomach punch loss for the PC boys.  They trailed 38-31 midway through the fourth, only to score nine in a row and force overtime at 40-40.  After DCG scored the first five points of OT, the Eagles rallied again, this time with eight straight points to take a 48-45 lead.

The Mustang’s Trenton Liebe answered with a game tying three, then the Eagles got the ball for a chance to win.  When Jack Vermeer dribbled around a Josh Van Gorp screen, Cole Glasgow picked his pocket and raced in for a game-winning layup just before the buzzer sounded.

Van Gorp led Pella Christian with 16 points, 12 of which came in the second half, and Keean Cadwell and Vermeer each scored 11.  The loss drops the Eagles to 9-9 on the season and 4-8 in the Little Hawkeye Conference.

Pella Christian’s girls trailed by as many as 10 points in the third quarter, but stormed back to take a 35-34 lead early in the fourth.  However, the upset bid was thwarted when the Fillies scored 20 of the game’s final 30 points to win by nine.

Allison Van Gorp had a monster 20 point, 15 rebound double-double for the Eagles, and Emma Witzenburg added 12 points.  PC drops to 2-17 on the year and 1-11 in the LHC.

Tonight’s games against Van Meter have been cancelled, as a member of the Bulldogs team passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday. Pella Christian will have their home finale of a doubleheader on Eagle Lane Tuesday against Newton.
