The Pella City Council held the second of two budget workshops Wednesday in preparation for the 2021 fiscal year. Leaders from the Public Works Department, City Hall, and Planning and Zoning gave presentations about upcoming projects and long-term planning. The key project for Planning and Zoning will be returning the city to having a director in the position leading the department, and with an upcoming vacancy, city administration plans to hire a supervisor to help with the increasing load ongoing development and additional zoning districts are having on city staff and administration. Council also heard about major infrastructure projects as it relates to water, wastewater, and streets over the next year. City Administrator Mike Nardini described both calendar year 2020 and the upcoming fiscal year as a major planning year, with the council expected to make significant decisions as it relates to the Pella Community Center, downtown infrastructure upgrades, and reconstruction of University Street near Caldwell Park. A public hearing will be held on March 17th for the Pella City Council to certify their budget, which projects spending in the fiscal year 2021, which begins July 1st of this year.
