COVID-19 Community Spread Confirmed in Iowa, Marion County Leadership take additional measures to
limit the spread within the county. There are no current reported, positive cases in Marion County.
The Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a rapidly, changing situation. Due to detection of substantial
community spread in Iowa, new recommendations are being made and new mitigation measures should
be implemented immediately for Marion County residents.
• Community spread occurs when individuals have been infected with the virus in an area and
cannot specifically identify the source of the infection, or do not know how or where they became
infected.
• The CDC recommends the following home isolation measures be taken if you are sick and if you
will not have a test to see if you are still contagious. You can leave your sick room and home
when:
o No fever for at least 72 hours (3 days) AND
o Other symptoms have improved AND
o It has been 7 days since you started feeling sick.

COVID-19 New Details:
• 3/22/20 The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) has been notified of 22 additional positive
cases of Iowans with COVID-19, for a total of 90 positive cases. There have been 1,215 negative
tests conducted at the State Hygienic Lab to date.

• Residents should continue following CDC Recommended guidelines to prevent the spread of
COVID-19:
• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based
hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
• Stay home when you are sick.
• Cover your mouth with your upper arm or tissue when coughing or sneezing.
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
• Social distancing – remain 6 or more feet away from other individuals
• No group activities with 10+ people

work, or single-parent who works, in the following fields:
– All hospital staff;
– All healthcare providers in private practice and all direct care staff;
– Staff who provide critical government infrastructure: examples include: social services,
child protection services, public health officials, tax collection, corrections and other public safety;
– Emergency responders;
– Food service workers, including grocery store staff and limited restaurant staff to include
supporting take-away options; and
– Others as approved by the Director of Human Services.

o Marion County Courthouse offices will move from the Historic Marion County
courthouse on the square to East Elementary School Monday, March 23rd –
Wednesday, Marcy 25th, 2020. The County Attorney’s Office in coordination with
the judicial branch continue to reschedule hearings in accordance with all
supreme court directives. We hope to have that process completed by early
next week. Again if you have court date set in the next few weeks, please
contact your attorney directly. If you don’t recall who your attorney is, contact
the clerk of courts office. If you have misplaced your attorneys phone number, a
list of attorneys who regularly appear in Marion county is available on the County

• In an effort to implement social distancing practices recommended to slow the spread of COVID-
19, The City of Knoxville offices, including City Hall, Police Department, Fire Station and

Public Works will be closed to the public effective Thursday, March 19, 2020 at 5:00 p.m. until
further notice. While these facilities are closed to walk-in traffic, City Services will continue to be

• Representation from both Knoxville and Pella area hospitals are requested for the next Marion
County Board of Supervisors meeting/press conference to be held on every Monday and Friday

per hospital in order to limit the amount of participants during this meeting.

• 3/22/20 Gov. Reynolds announced that all salons, barber shops, massage spas, and tattoo
parlors are to close at 10:00pm today.
• Small Business Loans – 3/21/20 Governor Reynolds announced yesterday that the U.S. Small
Business Administration (SBA) has issued a disaster declaration for the state of Iowa as of
January 31, 2020 and continuing. The declaration allows pandemic-impacted small businesses to
apply for low-interest support loans. The declaration comes after Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds
submitted a federal funding request via the SBA’s Economic Injury Disaster Loan program.

• Governor Reynolds signed a Proclamation of Disaster Emergency during the morning of
March 17, 2020, requesting the closure of the hospitality sector statewide beginning at noon
on 03/17/2020. These services include: restaurants and bar, theaters, casinos and gaming
facilities, mass gatherings (social, spiritual, religious, recreational, etc), senior citizen centers
and adult daycare facilities, all fitness centers, health clubs, health spas, gyms, aquatic
centers shall be closed continuing until 11:59 p.m. on March 31, 2020.

• Tattoo parlors, salons, barbershops and tanning salons are not required to be closed under
the declaration. They should be encouraged to do health screening for staff and clients
before allowing people in. If people are sick or exhibiting signs of illness they should be asked
to go home. Enhanced attention to sanitation and a focus on social distancing (i.e. keeping
patrons and staff at least 6 feet apart whenever possible) is also warranted during this time.
To the extent possible, the numbers of patrons in the establishment should also be limited
(encourage them to implement call ahead procedures).
