The spring sports season, if it happens, will be reduced to five weeks if students return to school on May 1st, but how the seasons look will largely be left up to local districts.

Chris Cuellar with the Iowa High School Athletic Association says what the schedule looks like after May 4th — or whenever activities resume, will be in the hands of athletic directors and conferences to determine what types of competitions each team will compete in.

“Just because we have the first competition date set for May 4th, doesn’t mean everybody needs to start May 4th. And just because we have 12 dates set aside for track and field typically in the regular season, doesn’t mean people should try or will try to put 12 dates between May 4th and what we currently have laid out for the state qualifying meet, which is May 28th.”

“We trust them to make the right decisions and we know there is going to be some flexibility required…we didn’t want to impose anything upon districts because we want them to make the best decisions for their programs.”

Cuellar says new postseason dates have been set for state qualifying meets and games, which right now will begin in late May, as well as state tournaments, all of which will take place in early June. Details about the baseball and softball season will soon be released if any changes to the season are deemed necessary. Hear more from Cuellar on tonight’s Radio Sports Page at 6 p.m. on KNIA/KRLS.
