The loss of spring sports has hit all local athletes hard, especially members of the class of 2020, and those with dreams of state championship gold.
For a handful of Tulip City track and field seniors, that was a realistic goal and possibility if the season unfolded as hoped — especially as the Drake Relays would be churning along today into the weekend.
Pella Lady Dutch Head Coach Dak Rasmussen says the sting is present in all athletes, but for Seniors Elsie Thoreson and Caroline McMartin, the loss hurts all that much more, especially with the gains they made in offseason training.
Eagles Head Coach Keith Anderson says it’s a lost spring for the likes of Blake Veenstra, who busted a school record just before heading to the state meet and earning top 10 finishes in the shot put and discus, as well as seniors sprinters who had several rounds of state success such as Chloe Morgan and Erica Nikkel.
Both coaches expressed they understand why the season had to be lost in the interest of public safety, but they are also working on easing the hurt for the teams and working on ways to honor their accomplishments. Hear from both on Saturday’s Radio Coaches Corner at 9 a.m. on 92.1 KRLS.
