The Iowa Legislature has recessed, finishing up their abbreviated session on Sunday afternoon. Senator Julian Garrett tells KNIA News the legislature was in session until around 6am Saturday night into Sunday morning, with many bills being discussed including the budget being passed. Garrett said the budget mirrors the 2019 version, which will have state departments not receiving an increase to funding.

“I think the state employees and department heads all understand our situation. You can look at it that way, but you can also look at it from the taxpayers. The people of Iowa, a lot of them are not even status quo. They’ve been out of work and really struggling. We all have to do our part. That’s the way I’m looking at it. And I’m sure most of our state employees understand that, and I’m sure they would have preferred more money for the departments, but I think they understand the circumstances.”
