It wasn’t pretty for either team, but it was the Eagles softball team that scored the run that counted the most in a 5-4 win over Pella, as heard live on 92.1 KRLS.

The Lady Dutch jumped early and took advantage of a two-base throwing error to open competition to lead 1-0. An RBI double by Emri Agre scored Chloe Morgan after a walk to tie the game in the bottom of the 1st. After each team went quietly in the next frame, Pella senior Courtney Thompson was able to get the go-ahead run home after a run-scoring single.

Back-to-back singles started the 4th for P.C., but the Eagles couldn’t advance the runners. After a third hit, a throwing error from the outfield allowed one run to score, and two more came in on back-to-back wild pitches from Pella to give the Eagles their first lead.

Pella would answer with one in the top of the 5th, but left the bases loaded in that frame and had the tying run caught in a pickle to end the 6th.

Lady Dutch Head Coach Teresa Thompson says they continued to struggle to finish innings and take advantage of several opportunities, and will have to keep improving with the playoffs looming.

Eagles Infielder Bailey Roose says her teammates were able to pick her up after a tough error early in the game, and she was happy with how the team kept fighting to grind out victory. (Listen to postgame interview with Eagles juniors Roose, Anna Bonnett, and Kate Vos):

The Eagles’ Cheyanne Collins finished a complete game, scattering eight hits and giving up two earned runs and striking out four and was 2-for-3 from the plate, while Chloe Morgan was 1-for-1 with two walks and two runs scored. Kylie Tauke finished 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and a run scored, and Courtney Thompson was 3-for-4 with two RBI.

Pella, now 2-13, will host Grinnell in the extended portion of the regular season on Monday, a game that can be heard live on 92.1 KRLS at 7 p.m., while the 6-7 Eagles are off until they return to Grinnell on Wednesday night.
