The PCM baseball and softball teams went on their longest road trips of the season Wednesday evening, traveling to Jefferson to take on Greene County in Heart of Iowa Conference action. It was a split on the evening, with the Mustang baseball team winning 10-6, and the softball team falling 10-9.

After scoring a run in the top of the first, PCM quickly fell behind when the Rams answered with two runs in their opening frame at the plate. Four more runs in the third gave Greene County a 6-1 lead, but that would be all the Rams would get on the board. PCM came alive with four runs in the fifth to get within one. Then in the sixth inning, the Mustangs took the lead and never looked back, scoring five runs to take the 10-6 lead, which held for the final score.

With the win, PCM improves to 7-7 overall and 7-6 in conference play.

It was a close loss for the PCM softball team, as they lost in similar fashion to the way the baseball team won. The Mustangs started off with a 2-1 lead after the first, but four Greene County runs gave the Rams the 5-2 lead. PCM exploded for six runs in the fourth inning to take the lead back at 9-5. That would be all the Mustangs could get done, as Greene County answered with five runs of their own to take the lead back, and it would remain a 10-9 game the rest of the way. Hailey Schutte and Joslin Briles each had two base hits to lead the way at the plate. Briles tacked on three RBI. DeVore was the pitcher of record, giving up six hits and no walks while striking out one batter. PCM falls to 4-13 overall and 4-9 in the conference.

Both teams will host Nevada on Thursday in the Heart of Iowa Conference finale. For the baseball team, it’s also the regular season finale. It’s the penultimate regular season game for the softball team.
