Pella Baseball Mounts Late Inning Rallies to Topple Ranked Bombers

The Pella baseball team was searching for a signature win over a ranked team all season, and on our No. 8 moment from Pella High School in 2019-20, it came late in summer. They found a walk-off win over No. 8 Ballard in a 7-6 victory heard live on 92.1 KRLS on July 8th.

Pella trailed after the top of the 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 7th innings, but finally found the clutch hits they’ve been searching for all season despite both teams committing a combined 11 errors. After a 1-1 draw following the first inning and the Bombers claiming a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the 3rd, Aidan Pollock cleared the bases with a two-out, three-run double to give the Dutch their first lead. But more defensive miscues allowed Ballard to take a 5-4 advantage after the top of the 4th, a lead they would hold until Nick DeJong came through to tie it with two outs in the bottom of the 6th.

A nearly flawless inning by reliever and eventual game-winning pitcher Clayton Cummings in the 7th was trumped when the Bombers lead-off runner stole two bases and scored on a wild pitch with two outs to take a 6-5 lead into the bottom of the 7th.

The Dutch would find a bit more two-out magic, from an unlikely source.

In just his fourth varsity at-bat of the season, pinch-hitter Quinn Rhamy hit a two-out, RBI single to tie the game. A throwing error on a close play at first allowed the winning run to come home on a Nick Grandia ground ball.

Pella finished the season at 9-11 overall and said farewell to six seniors.
