The Red Rock Hydroelectric Project is nearing the finish line after six years of construction. Power Plant Supervisor Vern Cochran with Missouri River Energy Services says one of the two main turbines can generate power, and additional testing will continue into September.

Once the turbines are cleared for use, Cochran says the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will work to finish improvements at the North Tailwater Area, and soon after open that space and the rest of the Volksweg Trail closed for construction crews.

It’s been six years since a groundbreaking ceremony kicked off the nearly $400 million project installing a hydroelectric power plant onto the Red Rock Dam. Approximately 1,400 workers helped construct the project expected to generate enough power for 18,000 homes, roughly the amount in Marion County, with the City of Pella connecting directly to the site through Missouri River Energy Services.

A premiere showing of a video dedication ceremony will be available via Missouri River’s website and social media channels on Wednesday, September 2nd at 2 p.m.
