Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Theresa Greenfield visited Smith Fertilizer and Grain south of Knoxville Wednesday morning to visit with owners Max and Sharon Smith and to take a tour of the operation. When Greenfield asked the Smiths what issues they would like her to address in Washington should she win the election, Max Smith said that infrastructure is something he wants to see improved, and that he would like for legislators to agree on a long-term plan of action.

“There’s no question we grow all the food, the best food. But we’ve got one of the worst transportation systems for the future. I’ve got 18 grandchildren, and I feel like my task is ‘What can I do to make it better for them?’ And if we can agree on something so simple like that, then let’s make a plan to make it happen. And forget the nonsense of the parties. What are we going to do to make this better for our transportation to get it across this country?”

Greenfield stated that she believes this is not a partisan issue, and that she would prioritize the fixing of infrastructure if elected.

“A pothole in the middle of the street is not a Republican problem or a Democratic problem. It’s a problem that needs to be fixed. Those bridges that are broken, they’re not Republican or Democratic bridges. That’s an investment we need to make, and I think it has to be at the top of our list starting in 2021, and putting that plan together.”
