If the opener is any indication, the Pella Christian girls basketball team has made big strides in the offseason, following a 63-53 upset of No. 8 in 1A Montezuma Tuesday night to begin the new season.

After taking a 29-27 advantage into the half following a back-and-forth pair of opening quarters, Eagles Head Coach Brad Engbers was excited to see how the team turned up the pressure on both sides of the ball even more in the 2nd half on a quality Bravettes squad.

The Eagles were led by 23 points from Allison Van Gorp, 19 from Emma Witzenburg, and 14 from Jocelyn Terpstra. Engbers hopes the offensive output is also a strong sign of things to come — the Eagles only topped the 60 point benchmark twice last season. This is also the first time Pella Christian has toppled a ranked foe since knocking off No. 9 in 4A Knoxville on January 8th, 2019.

Pella Christian starts the new season at 1-0 and will host Albia in the Eagle Lane opener. Hear the rest of the Eagles’ 2020-21 boys and girls doubleheaders on 92.1 KRLS and the KRLS2 stream this winter.
