For a team to have a 6-0 start, it must not only have good players, but those players also have to know what is happening at all times during the game. For the Knoxville Girls Basketball Squad, one key reason for the start and how the Panthers have done for the last few seasons is the experience of playing with each other– not just in basketball, but in other sports as well. Coach Jim Uitermarkt tells KNIA/KRLS Sports his seniors and for the most part the rest of the team has played not just basketball, but also volleyball and softball for several years.

Uitermarkt:
“That’s a really unique situation, kids along with their coach that have played together for that many years. Then you just add in the kids you have in the other grades, and not just basketball but in other sports so they really have a feel for each other.”

Uitermarkt says the 6-0 start is due in large part to the girls experience and being in situations where they need to force turnovers or make a key stop and turning that stop into points, which has already happened many times this season. Knoxville, after having its most recent two games called off due to COVID-19 concerns, will be back on the court January 5th at home against Centerville, which promises to be one of two showdowns for the South Central Conference title.
