A pair of ranked Dallas Center-Grimes basketball teams flexed their muscle last night on their home floor in a doubleheader sweep of Pella Christian heard live on the KRLS2 stream.  The Mustangs never trailed in either game, winning 52-34 in the girls contest and 73-40 in the boys game.

DCG jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the girls game, but Pella Christian hung tough, getting within five points early in the second quarter.  After the lead ballooned to 16 at halftime, PC started the third quarter on a 7-0 run to get back within nine.  While the Mustangs pulled away for an 18-point victory, Eagles coach Brad Engbers says that this game was about more than the final score.

“I’m not looking at this loss as a devastating loss because I really did like the way we competed.  If we come out and play hard, play good defense and hustle all over the floor, that’s the kind of improvement we’re going to see.  Sometimes it takes care of itself on the scoreboard and sometimes it doesn’t, but you want to be able to give the effort.”

Allison Van Gorp led Pella Christian with 12 points and eight rebounds.  Emma Witzenberg added 11 points and seven boards.  The Eagles are 4-5 on the season and 0-4 in the Little Hawkeye Conference.

The DCG boys blitzkrieged Pella Christian last night, making their first six shots as they built a 25-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.  While the Eagles got to half time down just 17, a 23-3 third quarter put the running clock into effect.

Levi Schelhaas scored 13 points for Pella Christian, who falls to 2-6 on the season and 1-3 in the LHC.  Up next for both PC squads is a home doubleheader on Friday against Newton.
