The Pella Christian girls basketball team is riding a three game winning streak as they get ready for tomorrow night’s Tulip City Showdown with Pella.  The team-first attitude of its three seniors is a big reason why.

Allison Van Gorp is averaging 17.4 points and 11.8 rebounds per game for the 7-5 Eagles.  Those are gaudy numbers, but they haven’t come easy as the senior center has faced constant double and triple teams this season.  She knows that when her teammates are at their best, she can be at her best.

“I think when our guards, especially on Tuesday Witz (Emma Witzenberg) really stepped up and she hit a lot of shots.  That really helps, because the defense has to go out and guard her more, so then that just makes it a lot easier inside.”

Pella Christian’s other two seniors are both guards, Anna Bonnett and Avery Baugh.  Neither are big scorers, averaging about three points per game each, but they hit the boards well for their size and between them they average nearly four steals per game.  Baugh says that she’s having the most fun when her teammates are having success.

“I more like to have other people have good nights than myself.  I always pray before games that my teammates will have a good night, rather than myself.  It’s so much fun to see them light up the court, and I just love cheering them on and I love those girls with all my heart.”

Van Gorp, Bonnett and Baugh joined Trevor Castle after Tuesday night’s victory over Oskaloosa live on 92.1 KRLS.  If you missed the interview, it’s available under Today’s Sports at www.kniakrls.com.
