When most teams decided to pack it in, the Tulip City showdown went on as scheduled, and from it, a couple of great games between the rivals were featured on 92.1 KRLS Friday night.

Pella Christian’s girls knocked off the Lady Dutch 48-43, while the No. 1 in 3A Pella boys survived a 2nd half surge from the Eagles 56-52.

The opener between the girls’ teams never saw either team lead by more than two possessions, and after an early six-point Pella advantage and the Eagles’ final margin in the final 20 seconds, it was only a one-possession game for either school with each swinging the game back and forth throughout the vast majority of the matchup.

It was a standout night for the Tulip City girls’ top scoring stars on each team, as Allison Van Gorp tallied 22 points and 16 rebounds, while Madison Naig scored 23.

In the nightcap, the No. 1 Pella boys seemed in complete control with a 15 point lead at halftime. But unlike most of their games so far in their undefeated season, a signature second-half surge to close the contest never came, and the Eagles brought the margin down to just one point by the end of the 3rd quarter by outscoring the Dutch 22-8 in those eight minutes. Pella Christian had a few chances to take a lead or tie early in the fourth, but back-to-back threes from Karl Miller kept the underdogs at bay and allowed Pella to hang on to their perfect start to the season.

Grant Nelson scored 19 points and Miller finished with 17 for the green and while, while it was a 14 point performance for Levi Schelhaas for the Eagles and a 9 point, 14 rebound showing for Niko Schirz.

The Eagles girls are 8-5 and 3-4 in the Little Hawkeye Conference while the Pella Christian boys fall to 4-7 and have the same league mark as the girls. The Eagles are off to West Marshall Monday for a boys only matchup, while the girls are off until Norwalk comes to Eagle Lane next Friday.

Pella’s girls fall to 5-6 and 3-4 in the conference, while the boys remain perfect after win No. 9 of the year; both are right back at it today — they host PCM for a non-conference Saturday varsity doubleheader. Hear the Mustangs and Dutch live on 92.1 KRLS, with pregame at 1:15 p.m.
