indianola-3

The Indianola girls and boys basketball teams continued their winning streaks in a pair of blowout wins against Sioux City West Saturday afternoon, the girls winning 68-48, and the boys 81-49 in a doubleheader heard live on 94.3 KNIA. The Indians girls went on a 32-2 run to begin the game and never looked back, playing suffocating press defense the entire first half, running a layup line to a 38-10 halftime advantage. In the third, the Indians hit five three-point shots to put the game away, before resting the starters the entirety of the fourth quarter. Indians head coach Jeff Janssen tells KNIA Sports his squad is playing balanced and unselfish basketball, which is leading to wins.

“That’s a credit to the girls for putting work in during the offseason, and getting shots in after practice. And I think also finding the girl that’s open. We’ve been preaching, really since the Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln game, let’s not settle for an open shot, let’s settle for a great shot. Our girls are really playing together now and putting up great shots most of the time.”

Brynn Ortlund led the Indians in scoring with 12 points, while Kendall Clatt had 9 points and 10 rebounds. The Indians had seven players with more than five points in the contest.

The Indians boys also got off to a hot start, hitting six three’s in the first half, with Drew Kingery scoring 16 points to build a 42-26 halftime advantage. The Indians continued to pour it on in the second half, with four players reaching double digit scoring. Kingery led the way with 24 points and 10 rebounds, Caden Rehmeier scored 16, Cooper Nailor had 11, and Dakota Heimbaugh dropped 10.

The Indians girls improve to 11-1 on the season and are on an 11-game winning streak, and will next travel to Glenwood on Tuesday. The boys are now 8-3 and winners of six in a row, and will next host Pella on Friday.

The Indianola wrestling team picked up several first place finishes at the Bob Sharp Invitational Saturday afternoon, with the Indians picking up a fifth place finish overall with 149.5 points. The Indians got first place finishes from Bowen Downey at 106lbs and Walker Whalen at 195lbs, and second place finishes from Ryder Downey at 132lbs and Jaylin Smith at 220lbs. Norwalk won the tournament with 219 points. The Indians will next wrestle on Thursday hosting Oskaloosa in a Little Hawkeye Conference dual.
