One person has died in the crash on Highway 5 near Bussey Wednesday morning.

Donald Shelford, 89, of Lovilia, was pronounced dead after he was transported by Bussey Rescue to Knoxville Hospital & Clinics.

A Chevy Silverado traveling southeast–operated by Shelford, crossed over the centerline on the curve near the intersection with Highway T-17, and collided with a Ford Explorer heading northbound, driven by 51-year-old Janet Billings of Albia at 7:53 a.m. Both vehicles came to a rest in the northwest lane. Traffic was diverted while crews were on scene.

Shelford was not wearing a seatbelt, according to the Iowa State Patrol. Billings was transported to the Monroe County Hospital by Pella Ambulance with injuries, and was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Responding agencies included the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Bussey Fire & Rescue, Pella Ambulance, and Indiana Township Rural Fire Department. The Iowa State Patrol conducted a crash investigation.
