The Norwalk basketball teams played host to Dallas Center-Grimes Tuesday evening in a Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheader, and fell in both games. The Norwalk girls fell shy of a comeback, 54-42, while the boys were stymied 77-64, as aired on KNIA3.

It was a tight first quarter for the Warrior girls, as the teams were knotted at 13 after one. But the #3 in 4A Mustangs took control in the second, outscoring Norwalk 17-6 in the period for a 30-19 halftime lead. Norwalk clawed their way back in the third, and got as close as 38-34, but a comeback attempt was put to rest quickly in the fourth. Norwalk’s starters were largely held in check throughout the night, with key contributors held well below their averages. Ava Johnson led the way with 14 points, while Jocelyn Bice tacked on 10. Norwalk is now 11-9 overall and 7-6 in conference play.

The Norwalk boys fell behind early, as the Mustangs built up a 16-9 lead after one. Norwalk made a run in the second quarter, but DCG quickly responded and handed Norwalk their largest halftime deficit of the season at 37-20. That first half deficit proved to be too much to overcome, as Norwalk outscored the Mustangs 20-13 in the third, but were unable to get any closer than nine points the rest of the way. Head Coach Chris Larson says his team did a few too many mistakes to beat a team of DCG’s caliber.

Cole Tunender and Redek Born each had 10 points to lead the way. Norwalk falls to 12-6 overall and 8-5 in conference play. The conference finale is this Friday evening when the Warriors play host to Indianola.
