For the first time ever, the Norwalk wrestling team will compete at the Class 3A State Dual Tournament, as the Warriors defeated Ankeny at home 43-28 in Wednesday evening’s regional duals.

Ankeny defeated Ottumwa in the first dual of the evening to earn the right to wrestle Norwalk. The dual started with a win by Ankeny’s William Hinrichs over Jason Kritzler of Norwalk at 195. The Warriors picked up wins by fall from Hunter Blomgren at 220 and Maddux Borcherding-Johnson at heavyweight, before the Hawks struck back at 106.

At 113, Jacob McKenzie of Norwalk won by decision. The Warriors also got wins from Grant Harbour at 132 by fall and Landon Card at 145 via major decision. The 160 bout was the first of three straight Norwalk pins to close out the match. Cade Schmidt got the 160 win to put Norwalk on top for good, and the meet was clinched by Tristan Duncan’s pin at 170. Nick Marker closed the night with a win by fall in the 182 match. Duncan says it was a momentous win for him and the team.

Head Coach Brandon Schmitz says it was an emotional win for his program.

Norwalk advances to the state dual tournament, which will take place inside Wells Fargo Arena on Wednesday, February 17th. Up next for the Warriors is Saturday’s district tournament at Council Bluffs Abe Lincoln.
