The Marion County Rural Water District experienced a water main break last week, and the problem was fixed as quickly as possible. Manager Austin Geery says that extreme weather conditions, such as the extreme cold and warmup of the last couple weeks are often the cause of these problems.

“I’ve seen pipes move a couple of feet in the ground. A few days ago, it was -40 wind chill, and then it goes to nearly 50, that’s almost a 100 degree swing. The ground will move, and that’s probably what caused this. It’s one of those things where there’s nothing we can do, we just have to deal with it when it happens.”

Geery says that when this occurs, it usually takes some troubleshooting to determine the exact location, but that the response is usually very quick, and he thanks all that helped repair this main break that affected much of the service area.
