While all boys and girls teams in all four spring sports have had their first competitions of the year from Pella High, it’s been an exceptional start and one of the best in program history for the boys track and field team wearing green and while.

The Dutch have swept all scored meets so far with team victories, and have done so against several top Class 3A and 4A teams, with strong performances in particular coming from thrower Kody Huisman, a deep batch of middle distance and distance runners, and a strong core of hurdlers racking up points and 1st place finishes. Pella’s performance at the DCG Mustang Classic has the team atop the Class 3A Varsity Bound power index with 1602 points, with the next closest team in ADM at 1558.

Head Coach Brent Van Hauen says this year’s team is starting to reflect the strong potential they had when they left Drake Stadium in 2019, and their preseason goals of competing for 3A’s top prize is now realistically in their sights, but only if they can maintain training marks, stay in good health, and stick together as a cohesive unit and build on their early-season success.

Van Hauen expects several Pella athletes and relays to qualify for the returning Drake Relays, and the cutoff is Thursday night to do so. The Pella Dutch boys and girls will run, jump, and throw competitively inside the city limits for the first time this spring at the Pella Christian invitational this Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. on Eagle Lane.
