The Pella softball team halted a 14-game losing streak in Solon Saturday, defeating Clayton Ridge 14-0, before falling to the host Spartans 19-2 in non-conference triangular action.

In blistering fashion, the Lady Dutch scored eight runs in the top of the 1st inning against the Eagles, and quickly turned the contest into mercy-rule eligible with six more runs in the top of third, taking advantage of seven errors from the opponent. Kiki Riggen was 1-for-2 with a double and 2 RBI, pitching three scoreless innings to earn the win, with Kylie Tauke scoring three runs and sisters Thea and Lily Wisse combining to also each score a run from the No. 9 spot in the lineup.

Nearly opposite fortunes were found against No. 10 in 3A Solon later in the afternoon, as the Spartans feasted on Lady Dutch pitching. The crushing inning came in the 5th, with Solon scoring 12 runs to put a game that was at one point 4-2 after two innings in the rear view mirror. Thea Wisse plated two with a single in the 2nd to give Pella their only runs in the five-inning clash.

Pella’s record is now 2-15, and they will join the Dutch baseball team for the Tulip City Showdown round one on Monday for single varsity games.
