The #9 in Class 4A Norwalk baseball team traveled to Grinnell Friday evening for a Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheader, and defeated the #5 in Class 3A Tigers twice, with scores of 4-0 and 2-1. In doing so, Norwalk clinched at least a share of the Little Hawkeye Conference championship.

The Warriors were in control for much of game 1 in the victory before a defensive contest ensued in the second game. After two scoreless innings, Ryan Wood tapped home plate on a passed ball to put Norwalk on top 1-0. Two batters later, an Evan Borst sac fly scored Cael Eck for the second and final Warrior run of the game. Grinnell loaded the bases in the bottom of the third and scored on a fielder’s choice, but the teams held each other scoreless the rest of the way.

Head Coach Chad Wiedmann says it’s a great accomplishment for a team that’s given their all so far this season.

Vinnie Mauro, Dylan Christensen and Casey Greenlee had one hit apiece to lead the way at the plate. Mauro was the winning pitcher, going six innings, giving up four hits and no walks while recording six strikeouts. Norwalk improves to 23-1 overall and 16-1 in the conference. They’ll be back in action Monday in a single home game against Dallas Center-Grimes.

The #4 in Class 4A Warrior softball team had the opposite fortune, falling 5-3 and 4-3 in a Grinnell sweep. In game 1, the Tigers scored three in the bottom of the first, only to be answered by two Norwalk runs the next half inning. The teams traded runs in the third and fourth to complete the scoring, but Norwalk stranded the bases loaded in the seventh.

In game 2, Norwalk scored all three runs in the top of the first. Grinnell scored two runs in the second and two more in the sixth to take the lead, which the Warriors were unable to come back from. Norwalk drops to 20-8 overall and 13-4 in conference play. They’ll host Dallas Center-Grimes in a single game Monday, which will air live on 94.3 KNIA.
