Several track and field athletes were recognized among the best in the entire state by the Iowa Track and Field Coaches Association for their performances at the 2021 State Meet in May.

The All-State Boys and Girls teams were selected, in which all member schools were honored for having top two performances in each event per class, with the top four best performances among all four classes selected as Elite All-State honorees.

From the 2021 State Champion Pella Boys, two events were considered elite performers: Kody Huisman in the Shot Put and the 4×800 relay.


Both were 3A championship performances, with Huisman’s throw of 59-04.75 was the 2nd best in all of Iowa at Drake Stadium.



The 4×800 Relay of Chase Lauman, Karl Miller, Josiah Wittenberg, and Tony Schmitz ran a school-best time of 7:55.14, which was the 4th best among all schools in Iowa.

From the Lady Dutch, the 4×100 Relay of Delanie Reynolds, Roselande Vanderhoff, Marissa Hackman, and Emily McMartin placed 2nd in the 3A field with a time of 49.11, which was also 2nd fastest across all classes and an Elite All-State performance.


Levi Schelhaas of Pella Christian was a 400 Meter Dash Elite-All State honoree from the Iowa Track and Field Coaches Association. Schelhaas ran a 48.53, the 3rd fastest time at the State Meet in 2021 regardless of class.


Indianola’s Carter Erickson was an Elite All-State honoree in two races, with his 11.08 time in the 100 meter dash ranking and 22.10 in the 200 meter dash both ranking as 4th best at the 2021 State Meet among all classes. Erickson was also part of the 4×100 relay with Tryce Kirgan, Will Shivers, and Micah Duey that had the 2nd best time in all of Iowa at 42.48.

Norwalk’s Claire Ferrell was Elite All-State in the 100, 200, and 400 meter dash events. Ferrell’s 12.36 in the 100 was 2nd best, 25.24 in the 200 rated 3rd , and 56.48 in the 400 was 4th fastest among all classes.

Pella – Shuttle Hurdle Relay: Class 3A (2nd Place) – 59.50 – Nolan Clayberg, Reece Thoreson, Brandon Winegardner, Gage Huyser
Knoxville – 400 Meter Boys – Kieran Nichols: Class 3A (2nd Place) – 49.65
