Pella Christian was down to their final three outs in the Class 2A Substate 7 quarterfinal against the Roadrunners of Interstate-35. That didn’t matter to the Eagles though as they rallied for four runs in the final inning to pull off the stunning 6-3 victory to advance to the District Finals, as heard live on 92.1 KRLS.

Trailing 3-2 going into the Eagles last chance to bat, Caleb Belzer started the rally after reaching on an error. Micah DeHaan was hit by the following pitch, before an attempted sacrifice bunt by Corbin Westerkamp turned into an infield single with a throwing error by the Roadrunners’ pitcher. The error scored two runs for the Eagles and allowed Westerkamp to reach 3rd base. Bennett Spronk followed that crazy action with an intentional walk and a stolen base. Kyle Branderhorst and Elliott Menninga each recorded sacrifices to score Westerkamp and Spronk to provide Micah DeHaan some insurance for the bottom of the seventh. With two outs in the inning, an error and a walk gave the Roadrunners life but Trevor Veenstra slammed the door on I-35 with a strikeout to secure the comeback victory. Micah DeHaan recorded the win on the mound for Pella Christian and struck out five in 6 ⅔ innings. Although things looked bleak for the Eagles late in the game, Head Coach Braden Shull was happy with his team’s fight and execution in the comeback.

The Eagles can be heard live on 92.1 KRLS on Saturday as they compete in the Class 2A Substate 7 Semifinal game against Centerville at Indian Hills Community College in Centerville.
