In a year filled with state champions, conference titles, and special seasons wire-to-wire, Pella High School’s Top 10 moments from 2020-21 will be loaded with some incredible highlights. However, several other competitors have earned honorable mention before the countdown begins this Monday. Here are the honorable mentions for Pella High School’s top moments over the past year:

Spring Sports State Tradition Continues

The return to spring at Pella High School was another special one. Several state qualifiers represented the Dutch, including:
– Will Simpson, Pella Boys Golf (Placed 7th in 3A, All-State Selection)
– Emily Blom, Pella Girls Tennis, won her first match at state, earning a top 8 finish
– Lucas Heap placed 2nd in 1A State Boys Tennis Singles, Jack Edwards/Vaughn Thompson placed 2nd in State Doubles, Caleb Briggs qualified for state individual tournament as district runner up



Pella Wrestling Team Earns 3rd at Conference, 2nd at Districts

The Pella wrestling team’s season was the best in over two decades for the program. Pella placed 2nd in Class 3A District 5 and 3rd in the Little Hawkeye Conference, their highest mark since Indianola joined the league in 2017. Damion Clark was the league champion in the 113 pound weight class. Additionally, Pella learned that day they were going to participate in the team regional duals for the first time under the 24-team format in Class 3A.

Lady Dutch Sweep Little Hawkeye Conference Volleyball

After an up-and-down year in the Little Hawkeye Conference regular season, the Pella volleyball team caught fire at the league tournament, sweeping Newton (21-12, 21-10) and Pella Christian (21-14, 21-10) Indianola (21-13, 17-21, 16-14), and Oskaloosa for 1st place (26-24, 25-23) on October 15th.

Hannah Nedder Automatic State Qualifier

For the third year in a row, Hannah Nedder represented Pella High School on the Newton Aquagirls as a state qualifier, earning a spot in the 100 fly meter race on October 1st. Nedder did not get to compete at state due to COVID-19 issues within the Aquagirls team.

Warner Catches Fire for Lady Dutch Soccer Team

Despite graduating one of the largest classes in program history, the future remains bright for Lady Dutch soccer, as All-State Player Abby Warner figures to lead the way. The freshman tallied 26 goals in her first varsity season, the most by any player since Grace Held scored 38 in her senior campaign in 2019.

“Big Man Touchdowns,” Levi Roose Scores Back-to-Back Weeks

Pella Defensive End Levi Roose found the scoreboard on back-to-back weeks for rare defensive touchdowns with a pick-six against North Polk and a fumble recovery for a score against Carlisle on Homecoming.

Pella Softball Triple Play

As rare a play as you’ll find on the softball diamond, the Pella softball team turned a triple play defensively against rival Pella Christian in a wild doubleheader split between the Tulip City teams on June 30th.

Baseball Team Upends Previous State Champions/2nd Place in First Week

While the finish wasn’t what they had hoped for, the Pella baseball team roared out of the gates of the summer season, which included a walk-off win over Knoxville, and victories over the two teams in the 2020 3A state championship in the same week, Gilbert and Norwalk.

Pella Girls Bowling Team Posts School Record at Regional Finals

The Pella girls bowling team finished the 2020-21 season with a school record pinfall of 2060 in the regional finals, the second time in the winter the team broke the 2000 pin mark.

Cutler Earns Conference, District Championships to End Career

In a race to the finish of her multiple-year varsity runner career, Abby Cutler capped off her final season on the track with a Little Hawkeye Conference and District Meet championship in the 3000 meters, qualifying for state as an individual.

Pella Dominates District Track and Field Meet

A tradition of excellence continued at the state qualifying track and field meet for Pella, as they dominated the May 13th event and won the district championship for both the boys and girls. The results from that evening turned into 34 total state qualifying bids for the green and white and led to another special weekend at the famous Blue Oval at Drake Stadium.
