Daytime highs in the 90s will continue over the next several days across south central Iowa. The heat wave will see feel-like temperatures topping 100, especially Tuesday through Thursday this week. The National Weather Service reminds the public that heat is one of the leading weather-related killers in the United States and can be very taxing on the body, resulting in hundreds of fatalities each year. Everyone can be vulnerable to heat, but some more so than others, including young children and infants, older adults, people with chronic medical conditions, and pregnant women. It is also never safe to leave a child, disabled person, or pet locked in a car, so all are reminded to look before locking. Other safety tips include reducing or rescheduling outdoor activities, wearing loose, lightweight clothing, drinking plenty of water, and checking on others who may be more susceptible.
