Counting down the top 10 sports stories of the year for Simpson College with #3. With the American Rivers Conference regular season title and an undefeated season on the line, the #14 Simpson Storm women’s basketball team was on the ropes against reigning conference champion #4 Wartburg on the road.
The Storm battled back and forth with the Knights, and found themselves down two with no time on the clock, but a foul was called at the buzzer sending the Storm’s best free throw shooter to the line in Cameron Kincaid, who knocked down both shots to send the game into overtime. After both teams threatened to run away with the game in the first overtime, the teams found themselves tied at 76 heading into a second overtime period.
With just seven seconds remaining and the Storm down two, freshman Regan Freland passed the ball to conference MVP Jenna Taylor on a sideline inbound, then received the ball right back to hit a three point bucket to put Simpson up one, with Wartburg missing the game winner on the other end to give the Storm an 81-80 2OT win. The Storm ended the season with a perfect 12-0 record and a conference championship.
