The ground-heavy attack of the Pella football team remained in full effect as the rushing game pushed them to a 28-9 victory over Clear Creek-Amana heard live on 92.1 KRLS Friday.
An opening drive for the Clippers resulted in three points due to a dropped pass in the end zone, and a 14-play, 62 yard, seven-and-a-half minute march put the Dutch up 7-3. Another drive capped by a Nolan Clayberg 47 yard score gave Pella a 14-3 lead. Clear Creek-Amana mishandled a punt in what could have been the key play of the game, setting up a short scoring opportunity for Pella just before the half.
After a quick, scoreless 3rd quarter turned up empty for the Dutch, Pella was picked off on their third pass attempt of the night in the red zone on the first play of the 4th, and the Clippers turned it into six-points in four long passing plays. But Pella and Clayberg answered again with another long drive, capped by the third TD for the senior.
Pella Head Coach Jay McKinstrey believes it may have been the best night to date for Clayberg as a true “running back,” considering his heavy workload and ability to recognize the right holes opened on the offensive line.
Clayberg finished with 178 yards on 24 carries and three rushing touchdowns.
Pella improves to 4-4 overall and 3-1 in Class 4A District 4 and gives them full control of their postseason destiny heading to Cedar Rapids Washington next week.
