The Melcher-Dallas Football Squad nearly made a dramatic comeback last night but Cole Metz was tackled short of the end zone and the Saints fell to East Union 33-30. Melcher-Dallas had the ball on its own 20 yard line with four seconds to play, when quarterback Logan Godfrey heaved a Hail Mary to Metz, who was waiting at the East Union 30, and was one missed tackle from pulling off the game winner. The Saints fell behind early after turnovers and busted coverage allowed East Union to build a 33-8 halftime lead, but the Saints struck early in the 3rd quarter when Godfrey raced 68 yards on the first play of the 2nd half. East Union would commit penalties and turn the ball over four times in the 2nd half to allow the Saints back in it. Coach Pat Ferguson told KNIA Sports he was proud of how his team fought back in the second half.
Ferguson: “So proud of our kids tonight. If we would have found a way to get that intensity of the second half into the first it may have been a different story, but we’re proud of these guys and way they fought and just one missed tackle for having a different story to tell.”
Metz had 309 scrimmage yards with 188 on 34 carries on the ground with two touchdowns and three receptions for 121 yards. Godfrey rushed for 110 yards and two scores. Melcher-Dallas finishes the season with a 3-6 record and loses three seniors.
