The Norwalk basketball teams hosted Winterset for a non-conference doubleheader, and came away with a split. The Norwalk girls dropped a 48-26 decision to the #9 (4A) Huskies, while the Warrior boys came out on top 54-52.

In the girls game, Norwalk was unable to overcome a sluggish start, and never held the lead. Winterset led by 10 after the first quarter, and cold shooting kept the Warriors under 10 points in each quarter. The loss moves Norwalk to 2-2 overall.

Despite falling behind after the first half, the Warriors stormed back and eventually led by as many as eight in the second half. Late in the fourth quarter, excellent three-point shooting allowed the Huskies to tie the game at 52, and Norwalk had a chance to hold on for the final shot.

Redek Born found Braedon Carlson in the lane for the game-winning shot. Winterset managed to call a timeout with 0.8 seconds left, and a desperation heave was off the mark. Carlson says the play didn’t happen by design, but it worked to perfection.

“I wasn’t prepared to get the last pass. It wasn’t intended for me, but Redek is a playmaker and can do anything. It happened at the right spot at the right time, and I was open.”

Carlson scored 15 points while Vinnie Mauro led the way with 16. Norwalk moves to 1-2, and returns to action Friday, hosting Pella.
