The Knoxville Police Department will introduce a new incentive program to keep its officers physically fit. The department will offer physical fitness tests, and if officers pass, they’ll earn eight to 12 hours of paid time off, depending on performance. City Manager Heather Ussery says this incentive is beneficial not only for the officers, but the city as a whole.

“This program will not only incentivize our employees to stay healthy. It helps the city as far as our work compensation claims, as well as overall health insurance claims. All around, it’s beneficial for the city.”

This program is based on similar programs implemented by other area police departments, as well as the United States Army. The program was approved at the last city council meeting.
