Indianola Basketball Squads Survive Tough Night Against Newton to Earn Sweep
Both the Indianola girls and boys basketball teams had a difficult time scoring the ball against the Newton Cardinals Tuesday evening, with the boys pulling off a 61-54 overtime win, and the #5 girls winning 52-32.
The Indians boys could not find the bottom of the net early on, trailing Newton 16-11 at the end of the first quarter, but a smothering defense held the Cardinals to just two second quarter points to put the Indians up top at halftime 19-18. After building a lead as high as nine points in the third quarter, the Indians looked to be in control until a late Newton run put them back just two points at 39-37 going into the fourth. Newton would claim control early, taking a four point lead into the final minutes, when Brayden Drea hit a late three to get the game back tied. Newton hit a free throw to get the lead to one point with just seconds to go, when Drea was fouled and hit one of two free throws to force overtime.
The Indians came out firing in the overtime period, taking an early lead they would not relinquish and they hit free throws to win the contest. Head coach Jeff Ebling tells KNIA Sports he is proud of the way his guys executed down the stretch.
“I’m proud of our resolve. We faced adversity again and battled through it just like we did at Oskaloosa. There are going to be a lot of tight games and situations, so it’s a credit to the boys for finishing it off and now we just need to get ready for Friday night.”
Drea led all scorers with 25 points.
The Indians girls got off to a hot start leading 22-5 after the first eight minutes, then held Newton to just three second quarter points but only Lauren Blake would score in the second quarter as the Indians took nearly five minutes to score and only mustered 11 points to lead 33-8 at halftime. Teams did not fare much better offensively in the second half, with Indianola scoring just enough to earn the win despite shooting 4/11 from the foul line in the second half. Lauren Blake had 21 points to lead the squad.
The girls improve to 9-2 overall and 5-1 in conference play, while the boys are now 6-3 and 4-2, with both teams matching up with county rival Norwalk Friday.
