indianola-3

The #5 Indianola girls basketball team picked up a win over #6 Grinnell Tuesday night 52-47, while the boys put up 59 first half points to win in a blowout 87-43 to complete a sweep heard live on 94.3 KNIA.

The Indians girls got off to a slow start trailing 11-5 with only several minutes left in the first quarter, but a 6-0 run put them tied with the Tigers at the end of the first, then senior Lauren Blake took over in the second scoring 11 points as the Indians built a 26-21 halftime advantage. The Indians hit five three-point buckets in the third quarter building a lead as high as 11, but the Tigers did not go away and got back into the contest to trail by just five going into the finals minutes, when Mara Bishop and Blake hit clutch free throws to seal the win. Head coach Jeff Janssen tells KNIA Sports after several weeks of his team not playing up to their potential, the win felt good to accomplish.

“We’ve shown signs defensively this whole year, we’ve shown signs offensively this whole year. But when we can get both sides of the basketball clicking, I’m excited for that. We played well tonight, but our best basketball is still ahead of us still this year.”

Blake led all scorers with 23, while Emily Naughton added 18.

The Indians boys dominated from start to finish over the Tigers, going on a 19-2 run to end the first to lead 31-10, then continued to pour it on in the second quarter allowing only eight Grinnell points while scoring 28 themselves to lead 59-18, with Drew Kingery scoring 19 points. The Indians used the running clock throughout the second half to rest the starters and empty the bench, as 11 players scored overall. Kingery led all scorers with 27, while Dakota Heimbaugh had 14.

The girls are now 13-4 overall and 9-2 in conference play, while the boys are 10-4 and 8-3. Both teams host Oskaloosa for senior night on Friday.
