Local candidates have met the filing deadline of March 18 to run in the June primary election for State of Iowa House and Senate seats.

In Senate District 11, current District 13 State Senator Julian Garrett will run for the Republican Party nomination to keep his spot in the Senate after Madison County was removed in the redistricting and will now include Warren County and portions of Marion County including Knoxville. Garrett says he is running again to help ensure the legislature continues what he says is responsible budgeting.

“We don’t budget right up to the legal limit, we leave a cushion in case the revenues don’t come up as good as projected. What that does is we are almost certain to have a surplus, and we have had a surplus the last several years. I think that is so much better than worrying if you are going to have enough money or not.”

Democrat Lisa Fleishman from Carlisle has registered to run in the Democratic Party Primary. She tells KNIA News she believes in the term “public servant”, and wants to embody that when campaigning.

“You serve the public. You are being a good neighbor to them, and you are more concerned about doing what is right for your community than enriching your friends. I believe in hard work, when you work in a small business you better roll up your sleeves and get the job done, because there are no excuses. Whether it’s 30 below or 100 degrees outside, the job has to get done.”

Brooke Boden currently represents House District 26, and is seeking the Republican Party nomination for the newly formed House District 21, while Joe Kerner from Windsor Heights has registered to run for the Democratic Party nomination.

Stan Gustafson currently represents House District 25 in Warren County, and has registered to run for the Republican nomination for the new House District 22, with no Democratic challenger filed to run for the party nomination in June. Find a list of all candidates who have filed to run below.
