The Pella Christian baseball and softball teams traveled to Dallas Center-Grimes Wednesday night and despite great efforts, both teams were unable to grab wins. The Eagles fell 7-4 on the baseball diamond, while the softball team fell 7-1 in a game heard live on 92.1 KRLS.

The Eagles softball team got off to a great start against the Class 4A #6 ranked Mustangs with an Emri Agre double on the first pitch of the game. Agre then advanced to third on a passed ball but was thrown out at the plate to end the scoring threat in the first inning. DC-G answered with a pair of doubles in the bottom of the first and a solo home run in the second inning to grab the lead 2-0. In the top of the fourth inning, Agre found herself in scoring position again this time with a single and a throwing error. A Faith Kacmarynski single via the bunt advanced Agre to third base, before a sacrifice bunt by Natalie Harrill scored the Eagles junior centerfielder. 2-1 would be as close as Pella Christian would get however, as the Mustangs plated five runs in the fourth and fifth innings to pull away for the 7-1 win. The Eagles got a big boost despite the loss as senior catcher Sydney Nunnikhoven returned from a dislocated shoulder to catcher her first full game since May 31st when the injury happened. After the game, Nunnikhoven said it was a great feeling to get back on the field.

“It was awesome. It’s so fun even to just put my cleats on finally again and be with the team. I’m so glad that this was the game I could come back for, I was a little bit nervous with it being DC-G, but we came out and put it out of great game, so it was an honor to get to catch finally again.”

The Eagles baseball bats started out the game on fire against the Mustangs, as the first five batters scored four runs on four hits and an error. DC-G erased Pella Christian’s lead with their own four run first inning, en route to scoring seven unanswered runs. Corbin Westerkamp’s two hits including a triple led an Eagles offense that had six players record hits on the night.

The Eagles softball team’s record now stands at 6-18 overall and 1-15 in Little Hawkeye Conference games, while the baseball squad’s record is 5-15 overall and 1-13 in conference. Both Pella Christian summer sports teams will look to snap their four game losing streaks on Friday when they welcome Newton to Eagle Lane.
