The Earlham Cardinals swept a varsity basketball doubleheader over the Pleasantville Trojans in West Central Activities Conference play Friday night in Pleasantville.

In the girls’ varsity action Earlham topped the Trojans 45-34. A close game at halftime got away from the Trojans in the third quarter when the Cardinals went on a 14-2 run in the third quarter to blow the game open by extending the lead to 37-23. Earlham was led in scoring by Kara Hohertz who popped in a game high 21 points.

Coach Jeff Cook’s Trojans fell to 3-2 overall and to 0-1 in league play with the loss at home. The Trojans collected 16 points from sophomore Joelle Johnson. Johnson was held to only two points in the second half. Hope DeMan, another sophomore hit for eight points while Lillian Mason and Emily Roe each added four.

In the boys’ game the Trojans fell 47-32. Both teams struggled offensively in the first half as Earlham led 17-13 at halftime. The Cardinals blew the game open in the fourth when they opened the final quarter on an 8-2 run to move the lead to 43-27.

Earlham had 12 points from Malaki Hale and 11 by Kallin Nicholson. The Trojans struggled with foul issues in the first half. Dayson Leerhoff had 15 points and Parker Sheets eight for Pleasantville.

The Trojans fell to 1-1 overall with the loss.

Both Trojan teams are back in action Tuesday against Madrid in league play.
