The Simpson men’s basketball team survived a comeback attempt from the Kohawks of Coe College Saturday afternoon winning 74-63, while the Storm women couldn’t hold on late as they fell in double overtime to Coe 91-86 in a doubleheader heard live on 94.3 KNIA.

The Storm men jumped out to an early lead but had a back and forth first half that included several scoreless minutes early on as they fell behind by as much as 12, but came back to only trail by three at halftime 33-30. The Storm dominated the early portion of the second half, going on a run to build a lead to 12 points with just over eight minutes to go, but the Kohawks weren’t done, and got the deficit down to just two points before the Storm again took over and hit free throws down the stretch to win it. Easton Darling scored 26 points to lead the squad.

The Storm women had their best quarter of the season in the first, holding Coe to just five points and leading 21-5 after the frame. However, the Kohawks would chip away at the lead the rest of the game as the Storm led 36-31 at the half and just 48-42 after the third. Coe never led in regulation, but shot stellar from the free throw line to build a comeback and tie the score with just under 30 seconds to go. The Storm had another lead in the first overtime period, but couldn’t close it out and the Kohawks would eventually outlast them in the second to win it. Coe shot 26-30 from the line in the victory, while Molly Lutmer led Simpson with 19 points.

The Storm men are now 6-2 overall and 1-1, while the women are 2-5 and 0-2. Both teams will next play Saturday at Wartburg.
