indianola-8

The Indianola girls and boys basketball teams swept Little Hawkeye Conference rival Oskaloosa Friday night at home, the girls winning 47-40 and the boys dominating 63-36 in a doubleheader heard live on 94.3 KNIA.

The Indians girls were in a battle the entire contest, the score tied at 13 after the first, then taking a late lead in the second to go ahead 26-21 at the halftime break. The defense continued to clamp down in the third quarter, as the Indians dominated the lane to lead 37-29 after the third, then traded buckets in the fourth to earn the win. Kendall McDaniel had 21 points to lead the Indians, while Emily Naughton had 12.

The Indians boys were dominant defensively from the start, allowing only six first quarter points to lead 17-6, then continued to outplay Osky in the second quarter to lead 34-15 at half. Indianola stretched the floor in the third as they continued to pour it on, outscoring Osky 22-8 as they built a lead to running clock, and emptied the bench out in the fourth. Senior forward Drew Kingery tells KNIA sports this team knows how to share the ball, and they were taking advantage of the aggressive defense by cutting back to the basket.

“When they are overplaying it’s a given that we are going to backdoor. It’s like a hotdog on July 4th, it’s there every time. We like to do some dribble-handoffs, so when they are overplaying the backdoor is always there and we are pretty good at hitting those.”

Kingery had 20 points to lead the team, while Brayden Drea shot four of five from deep to score 12 points. The girls are now 3-1, the boys 3-0, and both teams will travel to Ankeny for a non-conference battle on Monday.
