indianola-8

The Indianola boys and girls basketball teams played a non-conference doubleheader against old rival Ankeny on the road Monday evening, the boys pulling out a 62-55 victory and the girls falling 76-41 in a doubleheader heard live on 94.3 KNIA.

The Hawks could not miss in the first quarter of the Indians boys contest, hitting five three point shots while the Indians could not find the bottom of the net as Ankeny led 22-14 after the first. The Indians then allowed just one field goal and six points the entire second quarter while they started to finish at the rim and tied the score at 28 at the half. After a back and forth third, the Indians nudged ahead at 47-44 going into the final frame, where they played lockdown defense and made their free throws to win it. Head coach Jeff Ebling said even in the first quarter when Ankeny was hitting shots he thought the defense was really good, and he credits his guys for battling in a physical contest and keeping their heads in the game. Brayden Drea had 21 points to lead the squad, while Drew Kingery had 11 and Charlie Wilmott 10.

The Indians girls had difficulty handling the press from the Hawks, as foul trouble and turnovers early led to a large first half deficit. The Indians trailed after the first 18-5, then gave up 30 points in the second quarter trailing 48-18 at the break. Indianola came out strong in the second half, limiting the turnovers and finding success in the halfcourt offense, but the deficit was too big to overcome. Emily Naughton led Indianola with 13 points.

The boys remain undefeated at 4-0, while the girls fall to 3-2, with both teams next hitting the court Friday against Warren County rival Norwalk.
