indianola-8

The Indianola boys basketball team trailed by one on the road to Dallas Center-Grimes Friday night, needing last second heroics from Dakota Heimbaugh to pick up the win.

The Indians defeated the Mustangs 46-45, while the #8 girls fell to #2 DCG 52-41 in a doubleheader heard live on 94.3 KNIA.

It was a dreadful shooting night for the banged up Indians, who never got a lead larger than four or trailed by more than seven in the contest. The Indians were up 12-9 after the first quarter, then tied 19 all at halftime, with both teams going through multiple minutes-long stretches without scoring the ball. Both teams came out with some better offense in the third but the score stayed tied at 32 heading into the final eight minutes. After a back and forth fourth quarter, the Mustangs hit a free throw to go up one with just seconds remaining, when Heimbaugh hit the winner. Heimbaugh said after the game the final play ended up breaking down, but the team trusts each other to make plays when necessary.

“We got Brayden (Drea) downhill which is what we wanted to do, and I was in the corner as a shooter or if he got a layup. The play got broken down so I looped around him hoping to get something, got the ball and shot it hoping it went in, and it went in.”

Heimbaugh led all scorers with 15 points.

The Indians girls recovered from a slow start, trailing 12-4 in the first, hitting four three’s in the second quarter to take a 24-22 halftime lead against the powerful Mustangs. A dreadful third quarter for the Indians however led to them getting outscored 22-4 with 9 turnovers as the game reached a 21-point deficit. The Indians didn’t give up however, going on a 10-0 to put them within striking distance late, but they ran out of time. Emily Naughton had 17 points to lead the way.

The boys improve to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in Little Hawkeye Conference play, while the girls are 5-4 and 3-2. Both teams have a quick turnaround, playing Johnston today.
