The Indianola wrestling teams both competed in Saturday’s Jack Mendenhall Invitational at Ames High School.

Led by 120-pound champion Bowen Downey, the Indian boys placed sixth out of 17 teams with 137 points. The girls finished seventh out of 10 teams with 81 points.

Downey, who is ranked 2nd in Class 3A at 120, went 4-0 on the day with a pair of wins by technical fall and one major decision. Teammate Cael Meacham, who is ranked 10th at 138, finished 3-1 with two pins and placed third. Three other Indianola boys placed fourth: Jake Pontier at 145, AJ Pontier at 160 and Jaxson Boyd at 285.

Only six Indianola girls competed at Ames, but half of them placed in the top three. Summer Wolff was the runner-up at 135 pounds and Lanie Frericks took second at 235, going 2-1 with two pins. Nina Alexander added a third-place finish at 120, going 3-1 with three wins by fall.

Team champions on the day included the Ankeny boys and the Ames girls.
