The Norwalk basketball teams will travel to Newton tonight for a Little Hawkeye Conference girl-boy doubleheader starting at 6:15 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on kniakrls.com (KNIA3).

The Norwalk girls are hungry for a win following losses to three state-ranked teams in a span of four nights last week. The Warriors are 2-8 overall and 1-4 in conference play, while Newton is 3-5 overall and also 1-4 in the LHC. Both squads have picked up their lone conference win against Pella Christian. Norwalk beat the Eagles 60-24 on December 9 and the Cardinals topped the Eagles 44-41 on January 3.

All eight of the Warrior girls’ losses this season have come against teams that have spent at least some time in the state rankings, but coach Jill Martin’s main concern is continuing to improve and build momentum for postseason play. She hopes that momentum starts with a victory tonight.

“People may laugh, but I couldn’t even tell you our record because we have so many other things that we’re building on right now, that’s the least of our concerns,” Martin said. “But again, a win does a lot for a team… so we want those young kids to be rewarded with a win. They’ve been rewarded with a lot of other things, but a win says a lot more than positive feedback I can give them. Their effort, their focus in our scout and things like that – they deserve to get those W’s.”

Tonight’s boys game should be a good one, matching the 6-3 and 2-3 Warriors against the 5-2 and 4-1 Cardinals, who have won five straight. Newton has defeated two teams in Dallas Center-Grimes and Pella that recorded wins over Norwalk earlier this season; however, the Warriors’ results have been more favorable than Newton’s against Indianola and Pella Christian.

Norwalk junior guard Redek Born will look to build off Friday’s career-high 35-point performance and six 3-pointers against Grinnell in a 67-36 Warrior win.

Pregame coverage on KNIA3 will begin at approximately 6:00 p.m.
