The Knoxville Boys Golf Squad got off to a good start to the season by winning a triangular over Clarke and West Central Valley at the 5×80 Golf and Country Club in Melo on Tuesday while the girls finished 2nd and Faith Roozeboom claimed medalist honors. The boys were led by Twin Cedars Student Kail Arkema shooting a 37 earning medallist while Evan Smith carded a 38 for runner-up honors. While there are high expectations for the boys, the girls are still a building program under Coach Barry Smith. He tells KNIA/KRLS Sports that while they each have individual goals, there is not any pressure right now knowing several of them are first year high school golfers.

Smith: “Looking back at last year’s stats we averaged 250-260 per meet. I would like to get down to 220 and see where we finish in the meets. If we can shave a few shots here and there and see where they’re at then that’s when we’ll know the girls are improving.”

Roozeboom missed qualifying for the State Meet by just three shots last year and missed a lot of time due to an injury on the back half of the season. The Knoxville Boys will head to Pleasantville for a triangular with Carlisle on Friday while the girls will host a triangular at Pine Knolls Country Club with Clarke and Carlisle next Tuesday.
