indianola-8

The Indianola softball team came from behind to take down rival Carlisle in the season opener Monday, while the baseball team dominated Creston 16-1, and the boys soccer team fell to Dallas Center-Grimes in the substate semi final 4-1.

The Indians softball team fell behind 5-0 going into the sixth inning in a game heard live on 94.3 KNIA, getting multiple opportunities to score earlier but were unable to take advantage. A Kiley Kindelspire leadoff hit followed by a two-run bomb from Jordyn Gripp put Indianola’s first runs on the board as they trailed 5-2, followed by RBI hits from Izzy Benge, Katie Fosenburg, and the go-ahead hit from Brynn Ortlund to take a 6-5 lead, and the Indians held on for the win. Head coach Stacy Evans tells KNIA Sports once they broke through offensively it felt like they gained a lot of confidence.

“They feed off of each other. There were a lot of young girls we put on the basepaths that we put in there for wheels to put us in position and they did it. They are just connecting, I know it’s early, you just hope to continue that growth and hope these girls get a good feel for what’s to come.”

Benge got the win in the circle, while Gripp went 3-4 at the plate with a pair of RBI’s, and Katie Fosenburg went 3-3. They will next play tomorrow in a doubleheader hosting Des Moines East.

The Indianola boys soccer team fought hard against the Mustangs of Dallas Center-Grimes, giving up just a goal in the first half to go into the halftime break within striking distance. The Mustangs scored again to make it 2-0, but Jacob Chickering scored off of a Cole Burk assist to get back within one, but the offensive effort gave way to DCG as they ended up scoring two more. The loss ends the Indians season.

The baseball team dominated Creston, scoring 16 unanswered after the Panthers scored in the first inning. The Indians scored a run in the first, four more in the second, then 11 in the fourth to end the game early. They are now 3-1 on the season, and will travel to Southeast Polk tonight. The game will be broadcast live on 94.3 KNIA, with Andrew Swadner on the play-by-play. Pregame coverage begins at approximately 7:15pm.
